If you are looking for a nice, quiet weekend in the country away from it all then you will have really struck gold with this place. It has it all, beautiful views across the countryside, owners that can’t do enough for you and treat you like family, walking paths that take in the local country and beautiful local villages (and the pub stops of course). There is also Headcorn Aerodrome for the plane enthusiasts and we were lucky enough to be treated to the sight of a Spitfire flying past most of the afternoon. Plus, you’ll even have your own resident ghosts! But don’t worry, Eddie and Ossie are part of the family and are more likely to tip their hat, or wave from their cockpit at you
Me and my partner both have busy jobs in the city and we were desperate for a weekend away to reboot and recharge our batteries. We originally stayed at Elvey Farm 6 years ago when we first started dating and it was under different ownership. Initially we were sad when we heard the property had been sold, but continued to follow on social media to see what would happen. However, we were pleasantly surprise to see that the new owners had taken it over and had set up about lovingly restoring and refurbishing the property.
Meet Nick and Sonja, or as we now fondly refer to them, our adopted Aunt and Uncle in the Country. A wonderful couple who could not do enough for us, giving us information on all the best local pubs (more on that later), local site seeing spots, gardens, old villages and buildings of historical significance. They gave us a tour of the entire farm and even treated us to a tour of the original building from the 1400’s with original beams. The couple took over the property weeks before lockdown hit and have spent the past two years restoring the property to its former glory, with a few modern additions tastefully integrated so as not to impact the character of the building.
The farmhouse at Elvey Farm is a Grade II listed building, with the Kent HER describing the main construction periods of the farmhouse as medieval to post-medieval, dating from 1400 – 1540. There are five suites set within the historic stable block wing on the farm. We stayed in the largest suite, the Tenterden on the corner of the old stable. The room is spotlessly clean to the point that you could eat your dinner off the floor and the bed is AMAZING! The sheets are 5-star hotel quality cotton sheets, with a fluffy duvet and pillow that feels like you’re sleeping on a cloud. The bed is situated with a window facing and to, and the side of the bed, so you can lay in bed with a tea and watch the bunny rabbits playing in the fields in front of your room first thing in the morning. The bathroom is like something you would find in a 5-star luxury hotel with a walk-in rainfall shower, heated towel rail, mood lighting and huge sink and mirror. In the bedroom there is huge flat screen tv on the wall, a pull-out sofa bed in the sitting room area which is perfect for families or if you want to sit and have your breakfast, a hairdryer, Bosch kettle which lets you set the temperature, fridge freezer and plenty of storage space.
Although the property currently does not have an onsite restaurant, you are provided with a good quality continental breakfast, which suits us as the location means we prefer to get up and go exploring and then stop off at a pub for lunch and a pint. Check-in is from 3pm, which gives you a chance to explore the local area beforehand. At check in you are given a card with both Nick and Sonja’s mobile numbers, before being made to promise that you will call them if you need anything, no matter the time.
The nearest pub is the Rose and Crown at Mundy Bois and came recommended by Nick and Sonja. Weary from the travel and in need of a drink, we checked in and unpacked before wandering down to the pub where we had a lovely dinner of beer battered fish and chips, with a bottle of wine recommended by the landlord’s wife.
We awoke on Sunday and were due to check out by 10.30am, but depressed at the thought of having to leave after such a wonderful weekend we decided to see if we could stay on for another night. We called Sonja and Nick who were delighted and said we could stay on as long as we wanted. Be careful what you wish for guys! We are already planning our next trip and may even move in, as long as Eddie and Ossie don’t mind of course. And if we’re really lucky Sonja might bake us another batch of her lovely scones.
Five star and 20 of out 10, cannot recommend enough!
